Hello,

My name is Katey Rusch and I am a journalism student from Northwestern University. I am doing a story about the Evanston Backyard Chicken Group. They are trying to make keeping backyard chickens legal in Evanston. However I would really like to talk to an owner who already has chickens and loves them. I think it would be a great part of my story. This interview would take long and it would really help out my class project.

Please let me know if you are interested by emailing me @ k-rusch@northwestern.edu.

Sincerely,

Katey Rusch

Hey You!

Go, have fun. :-)

When you start to think stuff, ask yourself, "Is this true?"

That's always a good way to calm yourself down

Hope your date was great!

A. :-)

Hello,

I was looking a a Wikipedia entry and you garden is featured on it. I am very interested in urban agriculture even though I now live in the country. You blog has been very entertaining, especially the chicken entries. am originally from Chicago (Franklin Park) and have been gardening since I was in 5th grade. My wife had been living in Northbrook and I had a really large garden there. We moved out to Dahinda, about 35 miles west of Peoria a few years back. We now have a 22 acre farm and plenty of chickens. We also raise steers, goats, ducks, pigs, and a llama. I enjoy your blog and if I had stayed in Chicago I think that I would be doing something similiar to you.

Hello,

You have to be careful of raccoons! We had 12 khaki cambell laying ducks that raccoons killed in a frenzy a while back. They didn't eat any of them they seem to have killed them for fun.

Don't feel terrible because you need some help...I don't often post, but I read regularly. My divorce was FINALLY finalized beginning of Aug, but we are still filing ch 7. It's a horrendous mess; hard not to feel depressed and sick about it.

You are blessed to have friends, your home, your job. We must remember these, but never apologize for an occasion pill-popping.

Hang in there!

Ah, you are on the path, my friend :-) Learning that sometimes you just need to "be" with your feelings rather than "do" something about them is huge deal. It's all part of the process - You have to feel these feelings and be with them to be able to move through them and heal.

Certainly there are things we have no control over, but I disagree, however, that there is no hope. There is always hope. For some it's faith in things not seen - It's the bright glimmer at the end of dark patch. It's the smile of a stranger on the el or a hug from a friend. It's the spark of your spirit as you continue on your path.

If Aunt Maureen was here, she would look at you calmly and smile, and in that way that only she had, would impart great hope to your spirit just by loving you. :-) It's all good - you are where you need to be.

A little time with yourself isn't hiding. If, like me, you're still 'thinking' six years later, 'hiding' might be a more appropriate term. Or, you just might be thinking really deep thoughts. : ) Seriously, a little light dating-coffee or something casual in a group-might be a little less stressful. And, um, I'm going to stick my nose out here and point out that 'lazy' might not be a word most people would choose to describe you.

Sometimes the scoffers (I guess that's me and who knows who else) are just trying to help you refocus on all that you have that is good, which is considerable. It's not that you shouldn't complain about unlucky life events that bum you out, but when that's what you seem to focus on, then my 'responsible friend' syndrome kicks in. I know: everyone hates the responsible friend syndrome. It can be so damned annoying. And it's not helpful to deny the legitimacy of feelings, because they are real. I just wish you could hang onto the good feelings a little longer and put things in perspective: you have a house, a garden, and the money to keep them in great condition. That is huge. You have a ton of friends, and you are safe. You have a job that pays well, very well, and that's great, too. The other stuff is small potatoes compared with all that. Oops, I'm doing it again!

It's been a rough year for you-you're more than entitled to a whine or two (or three. what the hell, indulge). I'll add to the chorus of 'hang in there's. As for the economic adjustments: it's tough the first year after divorce, regardless of income. Adjusting one's budget and making long term life changes to meet goals isn't easy. Kudos to you for doing it.
